Overdraft: The Orion Offensive Episode 3: "Underwater Holdings" available now!

It's that magical Every Other Tuesday again, which means it's the release day for episode 3 of Overdraft: The Orion Offensive, subtitled "Underwater Holdings." Click to subscribe now, or check your Kindle account for it if you've already subscribed.

In "Underwater Holdings," Bridget Yang and her Surge Team are all wet — buried at the bottom of an alien lake, as salesman Jamie, out on his first disastrous mission, desperately tries to find a way to save them. Later, Jamie pays a call on a very different world for one of the strangest auctions in the galaxy. And, naturally, there are some mysteriously familiar party-crashers...

Remember, Overdraft is a Kindle Serial, so if you subscribe at $1.99 any time in the serialization period, you'll get every episode. Folks who subscribe now, for example, will start with Episodes 1-3 and get the next five as they come out.

There are resources here on site, including the Overdraft Glossary and the Overdraft Timeline, that you can check out; I'll update them with the Episode 3 material shortly

Finally, a quick note that I will be appearing this weekend at Galaxy Comics at 925 Clark St. in downtown Stevens Point, Wis., for a signing from 1-4. It's both Free Comic Book Day and May The Fourth Be With You day — an auspicious omen!

Misery Train! JJM sends Simpsons on crazy rail vacation in Simpsons Summer Shindig #7

Woo-hoo! Or is that choo-choo? Just in time for summer, I'm back in the funny pages at the end of next month, sending the Simpsons on a railroad vacation in Simpsons Summer Shindig #7 from Bongo Comics!

I've been hip-deep in prose-world with Star Wars: Kenobi and Overdraft: The Orion Offensive this year — but another of my Simpsons tales has been slotted for the big vacation issue, shipping May 29. "Railroaded" is a fun piece which finds the Simpsons on their way out of Springfield on the Silver Flash, a passenger train that turns out to be less than they'd hoped for — and more than they bargained for!

I've done a lot of train travel in recent years — including with my son, the railroad nut — and the story was a lot of fun to write. The issue also includes several other stories, by Ian Boothby and the whole Simpsons comics gang. This is my fourth Simpsons story — I was also in Bart Simpson #76 and #77 last year — and they're always a blast to work on.

Preorder it from your local comics shop, or here!

Overdraft: The Timeline -- and a new Knight Errant collection

It was only a matter of time — no pun intended — but I finally have the timeline for Overdraft online here at the site.

This companion to the Glossary includes every date mentioned and many events alluded to thus far in the first two episodes of Overdraft: The Orion Offensive.

As with the Glossary, I hope to update this regularly as more dates and events are revealed. Episode 3 of the Overdraft serial — titled "Underwater Holdings" — goes live on Tuesday, April 30 in the midafternoon, U.S. time. Click to subscribe!

Also, I neglected to mention last week that Star Wars: Knight Errant Vol. 3 - Escape is now available at your local shop!

Be sure to pick it up — and then check out the behind the scenes notes on the series here!

Sunday HarmonyCon appearance -- and an Overdraft Glossary update

A few notes! First off, once again in association with the Fox Cities Book Festival, I'll be speaking and signing this Sunday at HarmonyCon III in Appleton, Wis. I will have a presentation on my work at 2:15. (Visit their Facebook page for the complete schedule.) It's at the Harmony Cafe, 233 E. College Ave.

And with the second episode, "Golden Handshake," of Overdraft: The Orion Offensive out this week, I have updated the Overdraft Glossary to reflect the material in that episode as well as everything that's appeared previously in the milieu. There are a couple of small bits in the second chapter that will be retroactively fixed — I got misspelled a name or two, and later in the serial's production, I had changed the name of the team's shuttle. (One of the benefits of the Kindle serial release is these sorts of revisions can be made; I expect them to be rare!) The Glossary has the correct, current spellings on things. I hope to get the timeline going soon. It's been a little hectic!

Part three will be out in 11 days. Be sure to leave your thoughts in the discussion threads Amazon has set up!

Overdraft: The Orion Offensive Episode 2: "Golden Handshake" available now!

It's Every Other Tuesday, which means it's the release day for episode 2 of Overdraft: The Orion Offensive, subtitled "Golden Handshake." Click to subscribe now, or check your Kindle account for it if you've already subscribed.

In "Golden Handshake," Bridget Yang and her Surge Team are torn between protecting Jamie and wanting to kill him themselves. But the trader forces a fast decision when he has his first alien encounter with the ruthless Xylanx! Later, Jamie pays his first sales call to a strange planet — and finds out how difficult his task really is.

There's also a new interview online today with Club Jade — including a giveaway of "Human Error," the original short story set in the Whirliverse that was in last year's Armored anthology. I will likely make it available generally later in the year, but here's your chance to get it now.

Remember, Overdraft is a Kindle Serial, so if you subscribe at $1.99 any time in the serialization period, you'll get every episode. Folks who subscribe now, for example, will start with Episodes 1 and 2 and get the next six as they come out.

I'll make some updates soon to the Overdraft Glossary, and hopefully add some more content as time goes on.

Overdraft: The Glossary! Indexing the Whirliverse, Part 1

Readers of my site know I do a lot of production notes about the stories I've worked on; just about every work on here has some behind the scenes information and trivia. (Click to read my notes on comics and fiction, for example.)

With Overdraft: The Orion Offensive now ongoing as an Amazon serial, I thought I'd do something new: with each episode that releases, I'll be posting my Overdraft Glossary of characters, locations, and concepts, current as to the most recent release. Click here to check it out.

It's a file I have kept up to date as I've written; the full file already has the material on all the later chapters, but what you're seeing now just covers episode 1 of The Orion Offensive, as well as the original "Human Error" story. If time allows, I will also do the same thing with the historical timeline for the series.

The second episode downloads automatically on Tuesday, April 16. If you've already subscribed, it will appear magically in your Kindle account; if not, it's still available at the price of $1.99 for the whole series. You'll get the earlier episode too.

I'm very gratified by the response to the first episode; the work's been doing well on the Kindle bestseller lists for military and high-tech sci-fi. I think the serialized fiction idea is a cool one, and I'm glad to see it's making inroads. Which reminds me: click here to see my guest post this week from the official Kindle blog -- and here to see my interview with RoqooDepot about the series.

See you in your Kindle, next Tuesday!

Overdraft: The Orion Offensive Episode 1 available today!

It's OOO-Day! Today, "Greenmail," the first episode of my new Kindle Serial, Overdraft: The Orion Offensive, goes live and is available to download. Wahoo!

In Part 1, we meet conniving desk-trader Jamie Sturm, the 22nd Century equivalent of a hedge fund manager. He's blown through a huge amount of his firm’s money, putting an entire interstellar expedition at risk. But the swindler is surprised when the armored security team arrives to take him back to the stars to get their money back, one dangerous alien encounter at a time!

It’s space-trading space opera with a military SF bent, set in the 22nd century universe I introduced in “Human Error” in last year’s Armored anthology from Baen Books. There’s no instantaneous communication in the “Whirliverse,” so commerce is very much more like it was during the time of the East India Company, which was my inspiration. And there’s a size limit to interstellar transportation, which literally changes the shape of once-familiar starships: everything's modular. It’s stellar travel in the Age of Rail — seasoned with a lot of the fun interplay I like to employ in my writing.

Overdraft is a Kindle Serial published by 47North. It's a full-length novel, delivered 12,000+ words at a time every two weeks until it's finished. One $1.99 price gets them all.

The Q/A:

Q. How many episodes do I get for my $1.99?

A. As stated, all of them! Every one that's been released in the storyline to date (which, today, is one).

Q. What formats is the Kindle Serial available in?

A. The Kindle Serial is, as its name implies, exclusive to Kindle users, but Kindle-reading software is available for many devices for free: Mac, PC, Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, etc. I just downloaded a copy to my personal computer using one of the apps. Click here to download a wide range of free Kindle Reading Apps.

The eventual physical book will be available through and wherever books are sold. I'll post links and the ISBN number then.

Q. How long is the $1.99 pricing good for?

A. Until the serialization period ends — which would be a date sometime this summer. At that point, new purchasers will get the full ebook at regular ebook pricing — or can choose the physical trade paperback, which will be made available at the same time at regular trade paperback pricing.

I'll be posting more related content here in coming weeks — and there's a forum set up on Amazon you can also ask questions in. Always happy to answer questions here, as well.

You can post reviews at any time during the serialization period. Thanks, and enjoy the ride!

Ready Player One! Star Wars: Pinball - The Novel!

Welcome to April! And you are welcome to read the news of my latest foray into cross-media inter-license branded fiction, with the kindly folks at Del Rey. Click here to read about Star Wars: Pinball - Boba Fett!

"In late 2013, Del Rey takes that synergistic approach to a new level with its trilogy novelizing Star Wars: Pinball: Boba Fett, a new downloadable game developed by Zen Studios in partnership with LucasArts. First in the series Star Wars: Pinball: Boba Fett-The Novel adapting the game’s table starring the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunter."

“Pinball is long overdue for an adaptation,” Miller said. “A pinball machine really is a story, when you think about it: it has a beginning, a middle, and an end. There’s even a story structure implied: in those three metal balls are three dramatic acts, accompanied by a rising crescendo of sounds. It’s an exciting thrill ride, and we’re going to try to capture some of that feeling in prose.”

@BoardGameGeek - Daniel Sarasio Meyer
It's something I've been interested in doing for a long time, having worked on both the gaming and fiction sides of things.

My hope is to get the opportunity to adapt the old board games next. Like Escape from the Death Star. Gamers have known for years there were multiple clones of Han, Chewie, Luke, and Leia running around the Death Star — now we can finally explain that in continuity!

April 2 Update: Well, of course, as you saw, this was Del Rey's April Fool story for the year. I plead guilty as accomplice! Fear not: RoqooDepot doled a measure of payback in the hours following, advertising my new Overdraft Cereal!
